Zachary Gottman Named NAIA Scholar-Athlete in Baseball

Seven Culver-Stockton College baseball players have been named 2014 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes for their performance in the classroom this season. Zachary Gottman, of Rockford, Ill.., was one of those players named to the list.

Named to the list were seniors Craig Bastert, Trent Brisboe, Danny Carroll, Nate Olin, and Edikson Zaro, and juniors Ryan Ungerecht and Zach Gottman.

Bastert, a pitcher from Loraine, Ill. (Unity HS / John Wood CC), is a criminal justice major. He appeared in 16 games this season, making 14 starts, and recorded a 6-5 overall record. Bastert hurled 95 innings, completed four games and pitched one shutout while combining for a second shutout. He garnered a 3.41 earned run average, walked 36 and struck out 88, which was second on the team.

Brisboe, an infielder from Perrington, Mich. (Hastings HS / Muskegon JC), is a business administration and finance major who started 57 of the 58 games played by the Wildcats this season. He batted .265, collecting 48 hits in 181 at-bats, including six doubles and two triples. Brisboe recorded 26 RBI, 36 runs scored and was issued a team-high 31 walks.

Carroll, an outfielder from St. Clair Shores, Mich. (Long Shore HS / Kaskaskia CC), is a human health and wellness promotion major who batted a team-high .338 in 56 games this season. He also recorded team-highs in hits (73), runs (51), triples (8), slugging (.486), stolen bases (19) and hit-by-pitches (18). Carroll also tallied 17 outfield assists this season.

Olin, an outfielder from Galesburg, Ill. (Galesburg HS / Northern Iowa Area CC), is a sport management major who started 57 games this season, batting .271 with eight doubles, one triple and one home run. He tallied 31 runs batted in, plated 29 runs and had a team-best four sacrifice fly balls.

Ungerecht, a pitcher from Oak Creek, Wis. (Oak Creek HS), is an athletic training major who appeared in five games, all in relief. He hurled 3.2 innings, recorded one walk and two strikeouts, and had a 2.45 earned run average.

Zaro, an infielder from Powder Springs, Ga. (McEarchern HS / Sauk Valley CC), is a sport management major who appeared in 36 games this season, making seven starts. He scored 18 runs, had one walk, one sacrifice and two runs batted in this season.

Gottman, a pitcher from Winnebago, Ill. (Winnebago HS), missed the entire season due to an injury. Gottman is a communication and marketing major.

Two hundred fifty-seven baseball players were recipients of the NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete honor. Student-athletes must have a junior or senior academic standing and maintain a minimum cumulative grade- point-average of 3.50. Transfer student-athletes must attend the nominating institution for one full year before being eligible.
