Kyler Houser visits Minneapolis with C-SC theatre group

2015 Mar 12

Kyler Houser, senior individualized major of St. James, Mo, was among a group of Culver-Stockton College theatre students to spend March 5-9 in Minneapolis, previewing the city's theatrical programming.

The students went to six theatre performances in the four days they were in the city, including:

"Gertrude Stein and a Companion" at the Jungle Theatre, "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at The Guthrie, "Romeo and Juliet" at Park Square Theatre, "Twelve Dancing Princesses" at Stages Theatre Company, "Death Tax" at the Pillsbury House Theatre, and "The Drawer Boy" at Theatre in the Round.

The trip to Minnesota was part of the curriculum for both THE328: Applied Theatre Theories, as well MDP 300: Critical Theory and Performance. Before departing for Minneapolis, students read all the plays and studied them in conjunction with a centralized theory of their choosing.

"Seeing all the shows after completing their analysis allowed our students to see what they were studying in a different light," said Dr. Haidee Heaton, associate professor of theatre and department chair of communication and theatre. "The interpretations of each play are different depending on the theatre company and each theatre we visited was chosen for a specific reason."

After returning from Minneapolis, students finish the semester by writing a theory on a play of their choice for a conference presentation.
