Keegan Kindle helps student accountancy team at Culver-Stockton place in top 4 of the nation in IMA competition.

2013 Jun 25

Culver-Stockton's chapter of Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) placed in the top four of the country in the 2013 Student Case Study Competition sponsored by IMA. To place in the top four, the team beat out hundreds of submissions in an anonymous video contest. Once the C-SC group placed in the top four, they competed in a final round by presenting their submission live at IMA's Annual Conference and Exposition in New Orleans, June 22-26. Keegan Kindle, junior criminal justice and psychology major from Macon, Mo., was one of the four members of the case study team.

For this competition, members of the IMA Case study team had to create a video based on a case study decided by the IMA organization. The case study focused on cost allocation for Fine Foods, Inc., a fictional food distribution company. In the scenario, Kay Smith, the manager of Strategic Marketing Unit 2 at Fine Foods, INC., felt the accounting department in her company was associating inappropriate costs to her unit. The case study team overviewed the details of the case and created a video in which they outlined a solution. Their script featured the "Kitchen Rangers," accounting superheroes. After a complete study of the facts of the case, the Kitchen Rangers were able to devise a solution for Kay Smith. By the end of the video, the Kitchen Rangers solved the problem while educating viewers of best accounting processes along the way.

The C-SC team submitted this video to a specific YouTube account, where it was judged anonymously. A panel of judges from the IMA organization announced Culver-Stockton as one of the top four schools. Placing the top four was accompanied by a $3,000 prize and a trip to New Orleans for the students. The top four video submissions presented their scripts live at the national IMA conference to a panel of judges who had not yet seen the video. As with the video submission, this judging was done with the judges not knowing which school each team represents. In the end, the University of Southern Indiana won the overall competition.

"We are all very honored to have been chosen as a top 4 school to compete, as it has been several years since Culver-Stockton was last selected as a top 4 school, " said Lisa Button, president of the C-SC student IMA chapter, and co-president of the Quincy chapter. "We were nervous to complete, but felt confident in our script and our team's abilities."
