Gene Nanney Named to 2014 All-HAAC Baseball Team

The Heart of America Athletic Conference recently named its 2014 all-conference baseball team, with 10 Culver-Stockton College student-athletes receiving accolades. Gene Nanney of Fairfield, CA, was named to the team.

Outfielder Danny Carroll, catcher Jake Hillier and starting pitcher Cyrus Wimberly were named to the first team, while second baseman Jacob Angelo, starting pitcher Brock Kartheiser and relief pitcher Zach Engelbrecht were named to the second team.

Shortstop Trent Brisboe, infielder Gene Nanney, starting pitcher Craig Bastert and designated hitter Ryan Scarpetta were honorable mention selections. Kartheiser was also named as an honorable mention selection at third base.

Carroll, a senior from St. Clair Shores, Mich. (Long Shore HS / Kaskaskia CC), batted a team-high .347 overall, including .410 in conference play. He led the HAAC in hits and triples with 70 and eight, respectively, and was second in the league with 47 runs scored. He added seven doubles, three home runs, 33 runs batted in and 18 stolen bases. He led the Wildcats with 19 multiple hit games this season. In addition, Carroll was named the Gold Glove winner in right field, garnering a .992 fielding percentage. He committed just one error on 123 chances and recorded 16 outfield assists.

Hillier, a junior from Brampton, Ontario (Sauk Valley CC), batted a team-best .455 in 17 league games and .304 in 42 games overall. He tallied six doubles and one triple among his 35 hits this season. He also registered 21 runs batted in, one sacrifice fly and four sacrifice bunts. Hillier recorded a .986 fielding percentage, committing just three errors on 211 chances. He had 28 assists, including throwing out 22.3 percent of would-be base-runners.

Wimberly, a senior from Rockford, Ill. (Rockford Lutheran HS / Rock Valley CC), was fourth in the HAAC with a 2.35 earned run average despite garnering a 5-6 overall record. He made 13 starts among his 15 appearances, recording nine complete games and two shutouts. His 92 innings pitched and 102 total strikeouts were tops in the league. Wimberly was also a first team selection in 2013.

Angelo, a senior from Manteca, Calif. (Sierra HS / Butte College), was second on the team with a .339 batting average. He collected 42 hits, scored 25 runs and had 17 runs batted in. Angelo batted .353 in conference play, collecting 24 hits and scoring 12 runs.

Kartheiser, a junior from Somonauk, Ill. (Somonauk HS / Sauk Valley CC), recorded a 7-0 overall record with a 1.09 earned run average during the season. He was 4-0 with a 1.69 ERA against conference opponents. Kartheiser made five starts among his nine appearances this season, netting three complete games and two shutouts.

In the field, Kartheiser batted .284 in conference play and .265 overall. Overall he recorded a team-high 15 doubles, two triples and one home run among his 52 hits. Kartheiser scored 31 runs and recorded 36 runs batted in.

Engelbrecht, a senior from Hebron, Ill. (Alden-Hebron HS / Carl Sandburg College), made a team-high 21 appearances, all in relief, for the Wildcats. He threw 34.2 innings, garnering a 2-0 overall record with a 1.56 earned run average and six saves. Engelbrecht helped combine for two shutouts, walked six and struck out 18 batters.

Brisboe, a senior from Perrington, Mich. (Hastings HS / Muskegon CC), batted .306 in HAAC games and .272 overall for the Wildcats this season. He collected six doubles and two triples among his 46 total hits, scoring 33 runs and garnering 25 runs batted in.

Nanney, a senior from Fairfield Calif. (Rodriguez HS / Solano CC), started 49 out of the 55 games played this season, netting a .313 batting average. He collected nine doubles and one triple among his 46 hits, and he recorded 19 runs batted in. Nanney was second on the team with 21 walks and third on the team with 11 hit-by-pitches.

Bastert, a senior from Mendon, Ill. (Unity HS / John Wood CC), garnered a 6-5 overall record with a 2.87 earned run average. He pitched 87.2 innings, second most on the team and among all HAC pitchers, recording 86 strikeouts. Bastert was 4-2 with a 2.78 earned run average in eight appearances against HAAC schools this season.

Scarpetta, a junior from Rockton, Ill. (Hononegah HS / Rock Valley CC), batted .300 in 25 games this season. He had 11 extra base hits among his 24 hits, including 10 doubles and one home run. Scarpetta recorded five multiple hit and five multiple RBI games in those 25 games, finishing with 14 runs batted in.

The Wildcats, currently 29-26 this season, will find out where they will play in the opening round of the NAIA World Series when the brackets are released at 7 p.m. this Friday, May 9.
