Culver-Stockton College's Athletic Training Students Win 1st in MoATA Quiz Bowl

2018 Feb 8

Six athletic students traveled to Central Methodist University on Saturday, February 3, for the 6th Annual Missouri Athletic Trainers' Association Educators and Student Leadership Conference.

Students competed in the MoATA Quiz Bowl against other Athletic Training Programs in the state, both graduate and undergraduate, in a 2 round, final Jeopardy-style competition.

The C-SC team was comprised of four members, including Maryanna Catrine of Springboro, OH.

After round one, the team was in 5th place. During round two, the team was consistently placed 2nd/3rd for each question. After the final Jeopardy, C-SC was in third place behind two graduate programs. That's when the team decided to bet it all (except 100 pts). The C-SC team was the only program to get the final Jeopardy question correct.

After placing 1st, the Culver-Stockton College students received a $250 sponsorship from MoATA.

"Two years ago we were one question away. Ever since then our students have been confident that the championship was within sight. The whole competition, this year's team scratched and stayed in the fight," described Jay Hoffman, C-SC's Athletic Training Program Director and department chair. "When the dust settled, we came out on top. We got a big shout out from our 2016 team captain. This was a big victory for our program and all our alumni!"

C-SC will compete in the Mid-America Athletic Trainers' Association Quiz Bowl on March 16 in La Vista, NE. C-SC will represent the state of Missouri, along with runner-up Truman State. Winners of the MAATA competition will go on to compete against the rest of the US at the National Athletic Trainers' Association Symposium in June.
