Bacon Attends Capitol Hill Day to Lobby for Athletic Training

2017 Jan 30

In fashionable tradition, select C-SC athletic training majors and faculty attended Missouri Capitol Day, which is held annual in cooperation with the Missouri Athletic Trainers' Association (MoATA). Students and professionals in the athletic training field meet with their respective senators and representatives. Each year there are different agendas. For the past years C-SC attended to lobby for support for a Bill that is an update and revision of the athletic training state practice act. This year five students had the opportunity to attend, Mallory Bacon of Lincoln, IL, was one of the select few.

"We have 3 objectives in C-SC's Athletic Training Program: C-competence; S-skilled; and C-commitment. Per "commitment" we emphasize the importance of service leadership. We consider advocacy for the profession, like Capitol Hill Day, to be a key part of this," says Jay Hoffman, Associate Professor, Department Chair of Athletic Training & Health Sciences and Athletic Training Program Director. "This allows students to get their feet wet and teach them how to talk to legislators, with the support of professionals in the athletic training field and MoATA. It is also a networking opportunity. Students attending these events have even created conversations with athletic training professionals that have led to graduate assistant positions and job opportunities.
