Tony Nguyen participates in Culver-Stockton's largest community service event, Extreme Dome Makeover

2017 Oct 23

Tony Nguyen of O'Fallon, MO, was among the more than 350 Culver-Stockton students, alumni, faculty, staff and community members who spent Saturday, Aug. 19 volunteering for the annual Extreme Dome Makeover. The volunteers spruced up over 15 work sites in the town of Canton, Mo.

Volunteers spent the day doing various activities like painting, landscaping and cleaning. Project sites included both public areas and private residences. Extreme Dome Makeover provides the opportunity to introduce incoming students to the community of Canton, as well as to their classmates, advisors and neighbors.

"Extreme Dome Makeover gives the College a chance to give back to the city of Canton, the community that supports us, while giving our students the opportunity to participate in service learning, which is a key component of their education at Culver-Stockton College," proudly states Amanda Sorenson, chaplain of C-SC.

Service learning is just one of the many ways Culver-Stockton College implements experiential learning into its unique curriculum and 12-week/3-week academic calendar. Participating in Extreme Dome Makeover is required for all new incoming students as a part of the First-Year-Experience course although all students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to volunteer. This event has been highly effective at integrating students into the Canton community. The purpose of Extreme Dome Makeover, one of several service-learning experiences throughout a student's time on "the Hill," is to help C-SC students build relationships with one another and with the community members they meet during the event. It also helps students see the community in a new way and shows the impact that just a few hours of their time in service can make.

The College was honored to welcome a special volunteer to the group, Eric Greitens, Governor of the State of Missouri. Greitens was elected as the 56th governor in January of 2017. The governor offered words of gratitude and encouragement to the freshman class, and also be joined the students at many sites throughout the community to work alongside them.
